ACROSS LITE PUZZLE: [ PLACES, EVERYONE]

PRINTOUT PUZZLE: [ PLACES, EVERYONE]
PROGRAM: [Adobe Acrobat]
It’s been far too long since I’ve run a contest on the ole’ BEQ.com, so why don’t we rectify that problem with, um, another contest? Okay then, let’s do this.
I make so many puzzles lately, they all kind of blend together. It’s just one constant blur, much like my life lately. But I digress. For the latest BEQ.com contest, would you mind giving me a hand here? Just solve the puzzle up above and tell me what the theme of the puzzle is. Long-time fans know the drill: Email, send me a Facebook message, or direct tweet me your answer. The names of all contestants who got it right go into the hat, and if I see any evidence you promoting my site, I’ll throw your name in once or twice more depending on your ingenuity for getting the word out.
As always, I will be awarding two prizes (anything they want from the BEQ.com) to two contestants. One name drawn out of the hat, and one who not only got the answer correct, but also came up with the most creative/eye-catching/suck-up entry possible. In the past we had pizza deliveries, t-shirt designs, and flowers for my wife. Outdo yourselves, people.
All entries must be received by the end of the day on Wednesday April 13th.
Good luck to all. Share the puzzle. New puzzle on Monday.
Argh! My time’s a guess because I spent a while checking answers after I filled it and it didn’t say I was right. Didn’t notice that it didn’t have the answer included, but of course that makes sense!
32D is NOT a legimate crossword entry with the cluing given. It is NOT an abbreviation for the institution in question. Never has been, and just because some hack has used it in a puzzle in the past and it’s therefore in a crossword database somewhere doesn’t change that.
It’s bogus, it’s wrong, and it’s below you, Brendan. That crap doesn’t belong in a Tim Parker puzzle, much less a puzzle by one of the greats.
I take it you went there, Eric?
Didn’t go there. Lived in California all my life; have dealt with UC schools primarily from an athletic point of view as a journalist.
“UC”, “UC system”, “UC schools” are the common shorthand for the schools as a whole; “Cal”, “Cal Berkeley” (with or without a hyphen), or “UC Berkeley” for the flagship campus and Gov. Moonbeam’s alma mater.
I went to Cal (class of 86), so I had to try my hand at this puzzle. First off, I have to agree with Eric, no one calls it 32-Down. And second, I seriously thought of creating a puzzle with this theme a long time ago. Mine would’ve been Sunday-sized, and I had a different title in mind…but now at least I know it was a decent idea.
I am 100% on board with what Eric is saying. UCAL is worse than NLER.
My only nit to pick is with 15A — you still get an envelope with your utility bill but not an SASE. In fact, the envelope will have a little message printed in the corner saying that the post office will not deliver mail without correct postage (oh *thank you* for that reminder, how helpful).
I chuckled at 32D, knowing Cal grads would have a wee problem with it.
Thanks for another great puzzle.
Best,
Mark
What’s all the flap about?
Everyone knows that Jerry Brown went to the University of California, Andreas Lake (UCAL).
or, failing that, he attended UCLA’s prestigious School for Dyslexic Studies.
