I didn’t plan it this way, but … It’s the second in a series of puzzles named after famous bands. (Recall last week’s.) On deck for next Thursday: TV ON THE RADIO.
Tip of the hat to Caleb Madison who goaded me into making this one.
For whatever it’s worth, this one rose mightily, phoenix-style, from the ashes of a failed puzzle. An epic failure, I might add. One that never truly had a shot of ever taking flight. It was steeped in such obscurity and ambition, that the only way we could have got it to work (huge maybe) was to hope and pray the theme could be peppered “Easter Egg”-style throughout a themeless. And because it had to be a themeless, that meant we had to lower the word count substantially whilst raising the difficulty level (less room to cram a, wait for it, 71 square theme) to the extreme. And even though I’ve used 111 words already trying to describe why it wouldn’t have worked, it would require an additional 111 words (at least) just to try and explain what the theme was and how it worked. Believe me, if you have a headache now, you would have Michelle Bachmann-sized migraine after solving it.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
19A I thot that George Harrison admitted to something like subconsciously unwittingly using He’s So fine as the foundation of My Sweet Lord. Whatever. But as time goes by, all the good original stuff gets used up and then what else can you resort to? 10D The letter structure was throwing me off. Took a while to get to UTAHAGEN. Is Uta German, Swiss, or what?
Fun puzzle, which really did feel like a medium. Top was the toughest, since I thought it was going to be a variant of “God only knows.”
When I was done, I chuckled at the idea that the center word might be on theme.
11D…. Well, I laughed.
My last one to fill in was 11D and I laughed OUT LOUD at it! So glad that you make fun puzzles with ‘non-standard’ entries.

Yeah, I’m a little behind in my puzzling these days… Especially liked this one. The SW & NE corners are *amazing*.
