Just saying, I’m totally down with Lionel Richie. One of my old bands covered “Hello” without a drop of irony. And man, nothing beats Liz’s earnest rendition of “Say You, Say Me.” Seriously, I get goosebumps. And that’s before we broach the topic of the genius of the Commodores. Good stuff, all around. So, consider that a suggestion for a playlist to listen to while solving today’s puzzle. Enjoy.

Liked the puzzle but not used to this level of tone deafness in a BEQ crossword.
40D is most certainly not a political party in Northern Ireland. It is a decommissioned, terrorist paramilitary organization responsible for 1,771 killings between 1969 and 1998. The NI version had the word “Provisional” in front of the three letters to differentiate it from other versions of the organization. The organization’s political arm has always been Sinn Fein.
16D is a Hawaiian activity, limbo is a Calypso/Caribbean convention.
50A Does not exist on a manual transmission.
Yeah, I still enjoyed the solve, sorry for the rant.
And there’s nothing Japanese about AHI. It’s a Hawaiian word. It’s used there for two species of tuna, yellowfin and bigeye. In Japan, they are “kihada” and “mebachi,” respectively.
“Ahi” means “fire” in Polynesian languages. These large tunas are called ahi for the heat that the fishing ropes created on the outriggers’ gunwales when one was hooked using traditional fishing methods. Cluing AHI as some vaguely Japanesey-sounding word does a disservice to an interesting etymology.
Liz who, BEQ? I did a cursory search for Liz and “Say you, Say Me” but didn’t see anything. I’ve always loved “Easy” and how a love ballad could be so funky, something really unique.
Thought the theme was great with a nice revealer, very enjoyable. Only nit is that there’s a few seemingly obscure crosses, naticks: AIT/RIELSING JESS/BAJA HAOLE/URACIL.
Okay, for da record “Easy” really isn’t a love ballad. And I’d love a reply to my question about “Say You, Say Me” because I still can’t find what you’re referring to. Thanks
Thanks as always for quality twice weekly free puzzles.
I believe Liz is Brendan’s wife.
