SAY YES: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]

Those who are looking for either more puzzles to go along with their quarantinis; or tough, and I mean holy-good-God-Jesus hard puzzles; or even just folk interested in historical crosswords, all parties would be missing out if they didn’t do these “Something Different” puzzles. Here’s the gimmick, anything goes in these comically wide-open themeless grids. And when I say anything goes, I mean it. Almost all the answers are utter nonsense that are clued as directly as possible. Answers might be like DESIROUS OF SWORDPLAY, or PARKING LOT SPATULA, or things like that. The form started as a sort of show off competition between two past masters Merl Reagle and Henry Hook, and that very first one is included in the link above. Anyway, quick tip of the cap to “Steely” Dan Feyer for hosting the puzzles, and another two or three to Stan Newman, indie editor extraordinaire who was an early champion of the form in his various newsletters from yesteryear. Anyway, give ’em a shot if you’re looking for something you don’t see every day.
Gentle nudges that The Hub Crossword starts up on Sunday (get on board) Marching Bands launches at the end of the month. So many crosswords so many hours to do them.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
What do I do if I can’t figure out the trick? I usually rely on crossword blogs to get me squared away on the newspaper puzzles, but I can’t figure out the connection on #1251 (Say Yes). I solved the puzzle and I checked to make sure it’s right, but I just can’t get the gimmick. Wheaties:Tees? and I get that The Mighty Sequin is a play on Dylan’s song, but does it have anything to do with “Say Yes”? and how is Yahweh connected to the theme? I always enjoy Brendan’s puzzle and I know I’ll be in for some challenges every time, but solving a puzzle and not getting the gimmick is a bit of a downer…. 🙁
The same thing happened to me! I solved the puzzle and then spent a good while staring at it trying to figure out what it meant. I keep checking back here in the hopes that somebody leaves a comment explaining it.
THE MIGHTY (SE)QUIN
GO A LONG (YAH)WEH
CONCERT (WHEA)TIES
Say the highlighted parts out loud. Hope it helps
