I heard the news that Nancy Schuster (the lovely lady underneath the clinked glasses in the above picture) passed away late last week. For the heads, this is a pretty big loss. For those that don't know her, I'll give you just a brief resume. She was the winner of the first American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. She was a long-time editor of Dell Champion puzzles and later did editorial work for Random House. Nancy was a test-solver for the New York Times, as well as for a lot of others like Merl Reagle, Henry Hook, and, I may add, yours truly for quite some time. My colleague Mike Selinker put her head on the Mount Rushmore of American puzzle editors, and it's kind of hard to argue against that. My favorite Nancy anecdote that I think captures her perfectly, is that she sent Tabitha a onesie shortly after she was born. On it, it read: "Put that puzzle down and feed me!" Nancy just got puzzle people. She will be missed, and her debts to the community never repaid.
